XAUUSD Pip Value Calculation Explained (With Examples)
What is a pip in gold?” — the question confuses every beginner, because gold pips work differently from forex pips. This guide clears it up with simple math.
What Is a Pip in XAUUSD?
In forex, a pip is usually 0.0001. In gold, most brokers and traders count 1 pip = $0.01 (one cent) of price movement.
So if XAUUSD moves from 2,650.00 → 2,650.10, that’s a 10-pip move.
The Pip Value Formula
Pip value = Lot size × 100 × $0.01
Why 100? Because 1 standard lot of gold = 100 ounces, and each ounce moving $0.01 = $1 per lot per pip.
Simplified: pip value = lot size × $1
| Lot size | Pip value ($0.01 move) |
|---|---|
| 1.00 | $1.00 |
| 0.50 | $0.50 |
| 0.10 | $0.10 |
| 0.05 | $0.05 |
| 0.01 | $0.01 |
Worked Examples
Example 1: You buy 0.10 lots at 2,650.00, price rises to 2,655.00 (+$5.00 = 500 pips).
Profit = 500 × $0.10 = $50
Example 2: You sell 0.01 lots at 2,650.00, price falls to 2,648.00 (−$2.00 = 200 pips).
Profit = 200 × $0.01 = $2
Example 3 (the scary one): You buy 1.00 lot at 2,650.00, price drops to 2,645.00 (−$5.00 = 500 pips).
Loss = 500 × $1.00 = $500 — in minutes, on a normal gold move.
Example 3 is why beginners must start at 0.01 lots.
Pip Value and Your Stop Loss
Before every trade, convert your stop-loss to dollars:
Risk = SL distance in pips × pip value
$3.00 stop = 300 pips. At 0.01 lots: 300 × $0.01 = $3 risk. At 0.10 lots: $30 risk. Same trade, 10× the danger — the only difference is lot size.
FAQ
How much is 1 pip in XAUUSD?
$0.01 of price movement. On a 1.00 lot position, each pip is worth $1; on 0.01 lots, each pip is $0.01.
How many pips does gold move daily?
Gold typically moves 2,000–4,000 pips ($20–$40) per day — far more than forex pairs.
Why do some brokers show 3-digit gold prices?
Some quote gold to 3 decimals (2650.000). The pip is still the second decimal ($0.01); the third is a fractional “point.”
