Why Backtesting Matters

Why Backtesting Matters: My Honest Test Results (Wins AND Losses)

Most trading blogs show you backtests with perfect equity curves. This post shows you real test results — including strategies that failed. Because the failures teach more than the winners.

What Backtesting Actually Is

Backtesting = running a strategy’s rules against historical price data to see how it would have performed. On MT4, the Strategy Tester does this automatically and gives you hard numbers: win rate, profit factor, drawdown.

It’s not a crystal ball. It’s a filter — it kills bad ideas before they kill your account.

Real Results From Our Testing

Over the past months, we’ve backtested multiple approaches on XAUUSD with clean historical data, realistic spreads, and fixed costs. Here are honest summaries:

Test 1 — EMA pullback strategy (H1/M15): ~117 trades. Profit factor 1.51 — promising but not statistically proven. Verdict: demo forward-test only, not real money yet.

Test 2 — Inside-bar breakout (H4): ~2,388 trades over 2 years. Profit factor 1.15 — positive but not significant. Verdict: interesting, needs more validation.

Test 3 — Volume-profile scoring EA: 594 trades. Profit factor 0.62, statistically significant loser. Verdict: killed. Would have destroyed a real account.

Test 4 — Candle pattern system (pin bars, engulfing): Loser on every timeframe tested. Verdict: killed. Classic patterns don’t survive transaction costs on gold.

Test 5 — ICT/SMC state-machine EA: Only 2 trades in 2.3 months — too few to judge anything, plus a critical code bug. Verdict: not tradeable as-is.

Notice the pattern: 4 out of 5 ideas failed. Without backtesting, any one of these could have been traded with real money on hope alone.

The 3 Numbers That Matter in a Backtest

  1. Profit factor (gross profit ÷ gross loss) — above 1.0 means profitable; above 1.3 with 100+ trades is genuinely interesting.
  2. Sample size — 10 trades prove nothing. 100+ trades minimum before trusting anything.
  3. Max drawdown — the worst losing streak in dollars. If you can’t stomach it on paper, you won’t survive it live.

Ignore win rate alone — a 90% win-rate system with tiny wins and huge losses still bankrupts you.

What Backtesting Can’t Tell You

  • Your emotions. Demo discipline ≠ real-money discipline.
  • Future market regimes. A strategy that worked in trending 2024 may fail in choppy 2026.
  • Broker differences. Spreads, slippage, and execution vary — always forward-test on your broker.

That’s why our process is: backtest → demo forward-test → tiny real account → scale slowly. Skip a step and you’re gambling.

Risk disclaimer: Past performance never guarantees future results. Educational content only — not financial advice.

FAQ

What is backtesting in trading?
Testing a strategy’s rules against historical market data to measure its performance before risking real money.

How many trades do you need for a valid backtest?
100+ minimum. Fewer than that and luck dominates the results.

Can a backtest be profitable but the strategy still fail live?
Yes — overfitting, bad data, ignored costs, and emotional execution all cause live failure. That’s why forward-testing on demo comes next.
